William Allen Harrington, "Grandpa Bill", "Keepaw”, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.
Born August 27, 1939, in Tulsa, O.K, to the late Anna Harrington and the late Colonel Charles Allen Harrington. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sara Howell Harrington; daughter, Dianne Thompson; 2 older brothers, Charles Harrington, Frank Harrington; and step sister, Anne.
His mother passed away when he was 5 years old, during World War II. He was then raised by his great grandmother "Gramp" whom he spoke of often fondly. She owned 3 breweries, during the prohibition era. He attended Dewitt Military Academy from ages 7 to 14, and then attended Clarkston High School near Pinelake, GA. While in school he loved swimming with his Dog, Sarge and camping. He entered the Army Corps of Engineers, and served as Military Police at Fort Hood,TX. One of his duties while there was guarding Elvis. Upon leaving the military in 1966 he married Sara Howell and raised a daughter, Dianne Thompson both who passed.
He loved Sara very much. Whenever he rode by Sara’s workplace, he would say "Come on home Mama" in remembrance of her. He enjoyed construction and worked in the business for 25 years building office buildings. Bill was very friendly and made friends wherever he went. He was very artistic and liked designing projects to build at home. He made people smile with his famous blue truck with dinosaurs glued on it. If a kid said that they liked it, he would take a dinosaur off and give it to them.
He is survived by grandchildren, Allen Thompson and Barbara Tavernetti who he helped raise; and great grandchildren, Jacob Baker, Elizabeth Thompson, Katie Thompson and James Thompson.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at Hillcrest Chapel with Pastor Jimmy Lester officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home on Wednesday.
