Virginia (Griffith) Byrd

Virginia Griffith Byrd passed away peacefully at her home in Titusville, Florida, on December 17, 2021.

She was born in Pickens County, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Roy Welborn Griffith and the late Esther Gillespie Griffith Powell. Virginia was a graduate of Pendleton High School in South Carolina. She worked tirelessly in the civil services as a secretary for the U.S Army to provide opportunities for her children. She was very well-loved by family, friends, and acquaintances. Virginia was an extraordinary, joyful, and compassionate friend. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her recognized that she was an elegant, intelligent, joyful, and empathetic soul. She was a great listener with a lovely and caring smile. She was the mother of four children who adored her, and she always provided support and kindness for her family. After she retired, she dearly loved traveling, reading, gardening, bird watching, and chatting with friends and relatives and was always happy to have visitors and enjoyed listening carefully to their stories. Her boundless love for her children and grandchildren was remarkable, and her loss will be felt profoundly. In addition to her parents, Virginia was predeceased by three brothers, William, Roy, and Elza “Buddy” Griffith, and by her husband John E. Byrd of Newnan, GA, and by her daughter Kathryn Ray of Dacula, GA, and grandson Chad Barr of Monroe, GA.

Survivors include her sister Evelyn Tollison of Easley, SC; three children, Linda S. Barr of Loganville, GA, Gregory S. Whitfield (Stacie) of Douglasville, GA, Jill W. Mucci of Titusville, FL; grandchildren, Gary Stone, Kim Barr, Jason Whitfield, and Zoe Jane Whitfield-Mucci; and great-grandchildren Krysteanna Barr, Chance Barr, and Jakeb Barr.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 23, 2021, at the graveside, in Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Pastor Terry Calhoun officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at Hillcrest Chapel.
