George Lewis Berry, III was born March 25, 1951, to George ‘Goose’ Lewis Berry, Jr. and Evelyn Boston Berry at Emory Hospital. George grew up, with his sister Mariam Berry Probst (deceased), on a farm in Sandy Springs. He loved telling stories about riding his bicycle on I-285 before it opened to traffic and later cruising the dirt roads in Dunwoody on his motorcycle.
George and Lee Ferguson Berry married in 1982 at Newnan First United Methodist Church. Upon their marriage, George and Lee lived in Smyrna, attending Smyrna First United Methodist Church. George was active as an UMYF adult counselor and in the Smyrna Optimist Club. He also served as Vice President of the Mercedes-Benz Club, Peachtree Section. George’s mom lived with them for 16 years until she needed skilled care.
In 2004, George and Lee made Newnan their home, in part to care for Lee’s parents. Upon George’s retirement from the IT industry, he started ‘Driving Miss Roberta’. George drove his mother-in-law several times a week for her shopping, nails and hair, to say nothing of all her doctors appointments.
George and Lee enjoyed traveling, often taking Lee’s parents or other friends. George particularly liked boating and fishing on Lake Redwine, visiting the Florida condo, and any chance to spend with family and friends.
George was known to his family and friends as a nice, laid back person, a ‘there for you’ person. He was a thoughtful husband, including taking Lee her coffee every morning of their marriage. He had an infectious laugh, huge smile and great sense of humor.
George died peacefully on January 30, 2023 and is survived by Lee; Robert Probst, nephew; Ginger Probst, niece; Bob and Ann Probst, bother-in-law; and countless friends.
George’s life will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m., Friday, February 3, 2023, at Newnan First United Methodist Church in the Annex Hall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Newnan First United Methodist Church or to the Wesley Woods Foundation.
