Obituary

Mr. Vernon Leon West, Sr., 87, of Newnan, died Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

Born January 1, 1939, in Union City, he was a son of the late Fred Harold West and the late Millie Carter West. Vernon was truly a jack of all trades, pursuing a variety of careers throughout his life. He worked as a skilled welder, operated his own grading business, and distinguished himself as a self-employed contractor and home builder. Vernon's passion for working with his hands was evident in everything he did, and he was renowned for the many things he crafted, from Native American flutes to beautiful gemstone rings. In his spare time, Vernon enjoyed trout fishing, a pastime he cherished. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Lisa, his brothers, Gene, and Harold, and sister, Annie Mae.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Nancy West; sons, Leon West, Jr. (Karen), and Daniel West; daughter, Betty "Red" Sorrows (Danny); brothers, Harvey West, and David West (Lynn); sisters, Jeanette Ayers, Mildred Callahan, Faye Goplin (Kail), along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

It was Vernon's wish that he be cremated and no services be held. He also wished for his cremated remains to be spread in the Great Smoky Mountains, where he enjoyed spending time in nature.
