Mrs. Evelyn L. Smith, 99, of Newnan, widow of the late Morris "Smitty" Smith, died Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.
Born May 10, 1926, in Evansville, Indiana, Evelyn was a daughter of the late Dewey Claude Young and the late Martha Rhoda Young. A devoted member of Heatherwood Baptist Church, she actively participated in church life, warmly greeting fellow worshippers and until recently, graciously serving meals on Wednesday evenings. Evelyn found great joy in golfing, sharing many memorable rounds with her beloved late husband and family. She also delighted in playing bingo, tackling crossword puzzles, and watching Wheel of Fortune. In addition to her husband and parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her sister, Jeanne Trebing, as well as her brothers, Dewey Young, Jr., and Tommy Young.
Survivors include her son, Donald L. Smith (Ruthie); daughters, Debbie Canup (Leon), and Kim Bailey (Greg); grandchildren, Chris Smith, Bridget Nannini, and Natalie Bailey; great-grandchildren, Abigail Nannini, Samantha Nannini, Nicholas Nannini, and Gianna Nannini; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at Hillcrest Chapel, with Pastor Joel Smelley and Reverend Jim Spradlin officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday, one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Heatherwood Baptist Church, 721 Shenandoah Blvd, Newnan, GA 30265, in memory of Mrs. Smith.
