Obituary

Mrs. Elva Ilene Hoig, 88, of Newnan, widow of the late Steven Leonard Hoig, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, July 19, 2025. Surrounded by her loving family and friends, she was comforted in her final moments.

Born May 23, 1937, in Visalia, California, she was the daughter of the late William Powers and the late Edna Keltner Powers. Raised during the post-Depression era, Elva carried the strength, resilience, and compassion of those times throughout her life. As a young girl, she helped care for her siblings, laying the foundation for the deeply nurturing woman she became.

Elva retired as a criminal analyst with the California Department of Justice and became a member of Moreland United Methodist Church after moving to the Newnan area. She was a woman of many passions: Elva loved to travel. She visited Japan, the Ozarks, made trips to Alaska to visit her children, and explored many states across the country. A gifted painter, a published author of two books (The Lost Father and Our Auntie Victoria), and an avid reader who passed her love of literature on to her children. One of her favorite books, Shepherd of the Hills, was so special to her that she made sure each of her children had a copy of their own.

Elva also had a song for every moment. She loved to sing and, while living in California, was an active member of her church choir. A special memory cherished by her family is her beautiful solo performance of "Mary, Did You Know," which touched the hearts of all who heard it. Her children fondly remember that when one of them threatened to run away, she'd sing with a smile, "One less egg to fry, one less person to clean up after." Her humor, wit, and loving heart will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Powers, Jr., and sisters, Dorothy Glimstad and Marian Andreg.

Survivors include her sons, Robert C. Baxter (Bianca) and Gordon K. Makimoto (Lucy); daughters, Becky Glenn (Wayne), Beth McGuffey (Michael), Barbara Barrows (David), and Diane Samia (Gilbert); sisters, Madge Babbich, Wanda Smith, and Wilma Smith; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial inurnment service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia, with Pastor Sean Kilpatrick officiating.
