Obituary

Donald E. Saunders, 89, of Fayetteville, GA (recently residing in Canton, GA) passed away on August 6, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Norma Jean Saunders; parents, Charles Wilomel Saunders and Ida Clarice (Duke) Saunders; and siblings, Flora Wilomel Saunders (Williams), Eloise Saunders (Tallent), Eileen Saunders (Greene), Joseph Lamar Saunders, and Frank Webster Saunders.

Don was born October 25, 1933 on his grandfathers' farm in Macon County near Andersonville in the rural community known as Englishville. He graduated from Americus High School in 1953. He served in the United States Navy from October 1953 – September 1957, stationed in San Diego, California. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Don married the love of his life, Norma Jean, and soon moved back to Georgia where he raised all 4 of his children. He worked as an electronic's technician for the FAA his entire career. Don was a faithful member of Fayetteville United Methodist church for over 50 years. He was a loyal and loving husband and father.

Leaving to cherish his wonderful memory are son, Dennis Kirk (Linda) Saunders; daughters, Cindy Kay (David) Wood, Donna Jean Saunders (Todd Gilmore), Sherrie Jayne (Lawrence) Phillips; grandchildren, Caleb Lee (Jessica) Saunders, Kelsey Lynn Kreisch, Mackenzie Jackson (Taylor) Phillips, Dustin Jacob Phillips; great grandchildren, Avery Brooke, Raelynn Faith, and Laken Cade Saunders; brother-in-law, Lonnie Byler, along with nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the main sanctuary at Fayetteville First United Methodist church on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive visitors prior to the service starting at 1:00 PM. Cremains will be interred at Andersonville National Cemetery on Monday, August 14 with a service at the committal shelter at 12:00 PM.
