Obituary

Lieutenant Colonel Cecil Eddie Manning, U. S. Army, Retired, 75, of Newnan, died Saturday, October 23, 2021, at his residence.

Born September 4, 1946, in East Point, he was the son of the late Cecil Manning and the late Mildred Bagby Manning. LTC Manning was a member of Westside Baptist Church, he accepted Christ as his Savior at 2nd Baptist Church in East Point and was ordained a Deacon with 1st Baptist in East Point. He received a Master of Education from Georgia State University and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He began his career at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he organized the 85th Missile Detachment and then moved the unit to Germany and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant while serving there. Eddie left active duty in 1971 and joined the Army Reserves and was promoted to Captain while serving as the team chief of field artillery at Fort Gillem. He eventually attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and retired in 1994, while serving as a member of the 2nd Maneuver Training Command at Fort Gillem. Eddie was a master gardener and a math teacher for Fulton County Schools. He taught at several high schools in the metro area and was a founding staff member of Tri-Cities High School in East Point. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Estrada.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Shelia Lester Manning; sons, Christopher Manning (Julie), Nick Manning (Endia), Michael Manning (Kelli), and John Manning (Kellie); 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at Westside Baptist Church with Pastor Alton Midgett and Pastor Jimmy Lester officiating. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Chapel.
