Obituary

Barbara Jean Stephens, 70, of Newnan, died Sunday, December 28, 2025, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

Barbara Jean was born May 24, 1955, to the late Joyce Carolyn (Oliver) Davis and the late Bobby Charles Huggins. She was the oldest of 5 siblings, always taking care of everyone around her. She worked for twenty plus years at Kmart. Initially in the in the cash office, helping with the conversion from keypad registers to scanners. She transitioned to receiving manager. In 1994, she decided to continue her education to become a behavioral health therapist. She graduated from the University of West Georgia in 2000, with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She followed that two years later with a master's degree in psychology, and a year after that, her education specialist degree. She worked as a licensed practical counselor for Tanner Behavioral Health for 15 years, being a part of the opening of Willowbrooke, the mental health facility of Tanner Medical Healthcare Center in Villa Rica. She quickly rose to the level of manager of her department and entered private practice as Barbara Jean Cheeves in 2012. She was highly sought after, and highly recommended for her CBT techniques, especially in children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Jacob Cole Wright; and sister, Kimberly (Davis) Presley.

She is survived by her husband, Ray Stephens; daughter, Stephanie Beaver (Chris) of Newnan; son, David Wright (Sarah) of Iowa; grandchildren, Jordan Adams, Ethan Beaver, Emma Beaver, Grayson Beaver, and Karadyn Wright; great grandchildren, Alijah Adams and Alivia Adams; and brothers, Richard Huggins, David Huggins (Teresa), and Tim Davis (Jennifer).

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Hillcrest Chapel with Pastor Steve Bullard officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.
