Michael John Owens
The man. The myth. The legend. Michael John Owens, age 64, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2019, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. His family suspects that his passion for good food combined with his excitement over the upcoming holidays contributed to his sudden heart attack.
Michael grew up in Miami, Florida, but he moved to Newnan, Georgia, after falling in love with a redheaded freckle-faced tomboy, named Donna. Michael and Donna had five daughters and four sons together. They jokingly referred to them as their baseball team (although none of their children could actually play ball). Michael welcomed his fourteenth grandchild this fall, and less than a month before his passing, he walked his youngest daughter, Maggie, down the aisle. Michael loved the ocean, video games, dad jokes, and bragging about his children. He also loved to talk. A lot. He especially loved to talk about the goodness of God and to share his faith.
Michael came from humble beginnings, with only a seventh-grade education. He learned a trade and started his own business, Owens Electrical Service, Inc., which he ran for more than 30 years in Newnan. His customers knew him as the best darn electrician in the county (possibly the state). Michael made sure to pass on his trade to his sons, two of whom continue to run the business.
Michael and Donna would have celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary this Friday, December 20th. Michael is survived by his nine children: Elizabeth Koonts and her husband Scott, daughter Willow Koonts; Jonathan Owens and his wife Rebecca, children Sean-Michael, Katie Grace, and Ian Luke Owens; Annie McMichael and her husband Justin, daughter Hayllie Goss and sons Jacob and Tyler McMichael; Rebekah Odom and her husband Tommy, children Lucas and Katherine Odom; Emily Owens, sons Christian and Jordan Obanuwa; Joshua Owens; David Owens and his wife Kristen, daughters Evaleen, Bethany, and Hadessah Owens; Joseph Owens; and Mary “Maggie” Awbrey and her husband Nate. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret “Peggy” Johnson. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Elmo and Suzanne Owens, and by his brother, Patrick Owens.
Michael loved special moments and called those moments “celebrations.” Please joins us for his celebration on Thursday, December 19, at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel on Bullsboro Drive in Newnan. Visitation takes place at 5 PM. A memorial service will immediately follow at 6 PM at the same location.
